The Things They Carried

Students learned about physical and emotional weight of what a soldier carried in the Vietnam war through listening to an expert from the book “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien. They considered what it was like to be in the Vietnam war and the emotional impact it had. Next students reflected on the things they carry with them on a daily basis, emotionally and physically and compared and contrasted that to the experience of the soldiers.Students completed a contour line drawing of their own backpack and incorporated text of the things they carry with them into their artwork.

Wabi Sabi Teacups

Students learned the Japanese traditions of wabi-sabi and kintsugi and contemporary artists who apply these concepts to their own work. Students reflected and connect these ideas to their own making process and created a piece of pottery that embraces the beauty of imperfection.
