Creating Fiction and Hybrid Animals

1st Grade Unit about re-contextualizing images of animals by using collage techniques.

Fiction Animals

We started the unit discussing the difference between fiction and nonfiction. Students looked at both educational children's books about animals and story books that have personified animals. We created a list of the characteristics that are used to make an animal fictional and with that criteria students created their fictional animal collage. Example: walks on two legs, wears clothes, uses paws as hands.

Hybrid Animals

We start the next lesson in the unit by discussing mythical hybrid animals and reading the book

Cock-a-doodle Moooo!

Students are then given a work sheet to pick two animals that they will create for their hybrid. They must combine the animal names using part of both chosen animals to create a name for their unique creation. Students are given corresponding illustrations that they will cut, combine and assemble using collage. Next they use markers and other materials to create an environment for their hybrid creation.
